Registration

Registration & Accreditation

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), in line with the Engineering Profession Act (EPA), Act 46 of 2000, regulates the registration of engineering practitioners to ensure public safety, professional integrity, and competence in the field.
ECSA registers practitioners in two main categories:
Professional Categories

Engineer (Pr Eng), Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng), Certificated Engineer (Pr Cert Eng), and Engineering Technician (Pr Techni Eng)

Candidate Categories

For recent graduates or emerging professionals working toward professional registration

Specified Categories

For practitioners performing specialized functions not covered under the standard professional paths.

Candidate registration serves as a critical developmental stage, allowing individuals to gain structured workplace experience under the supervision of professionals, preparing them for eventual registration in a professional category. It signals a commitment to the profession and facilitates access to mentorship, growth opportunities, and performance benchmarking.

All categories are regulated according to nationally and internationally aligned competency standards, ensuring that those registered are equipped to contribute safely and effectively to society through engineering.

Professional Engineer (Pr Eng)

Leading Engineering with competence and integrity.

A Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) is a person registered with ECSA who is licensed to independently practise engineering at a professional level. Pr Engs are responsible for complex engineering work that requires advanced analysis, critical problem-solving, innovation, and the application of scientific and mathematical principles to real-world challenges. They often lead teams, manage projects, and carry significant legal and ethical accountability for engineering outcomes. To qualify as a Professional Engineer, an individual must demonstrate competence through a rigorous assessment process, including:
  • An accredited BEng or BSc (Eng) qualification or equivalent,
  • Completion of a structured period of practical training and professional development,
  • Submission of Training and Experience Reports and detailed Engineering Reports,
  • Success in the registration process, inclusive of the Experience Appraisal and the Professional Review Interview, to assess competence across defined outcomes aligned with international standards.
This category reflects the most complex level of engineering responsibility and capability in South Africa and is recognised globally through ECSA’s international accords.

Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng)

Applying advanced technology to engineering solutions.

A Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng) is a registered practitioner who applies established engineering principles and advanced technological knowledge to develop, manage, and optimise engineering systems, processes, and operations. Pr Tech Engs are often responsible for design development, implementation, project management, and technical decision-making in specialised areas of practice. To register as a Pr Tech Eng, an individual must demonstrate competence through:
  • An accredited Bachelor of Technology (BTech) or equivalent qualification,
  • Completion of structured engineering work experience,
  • Submission of Training and Experience Reports and detailed Engineering Reports,
  • Success in the registration process, inclusive of the Experience Appraisal and the Professional Review Interview, to assess competence across defined outcomes aligned with international standards.
This category recognises individuals who bring depth of technical expertise and practical problem-solving to the engineering environment and is aligned with international standards through ECSA’s commitment to global accords.

Professional Certificated Engineer (Pr Cert Eng)

Specialist expertise in engineering operations.

A Professional Certificated Engineer (Pr Cert Eng) is a registered practitioner with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), recognised for their specialist competence in managing and overseeing engineering operations within specific sectors, particularly in industrial settings such as factories and mines. This category is distinct from other engineering professions, as it focuses on the application of engineering principles within operational contexts, ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency. Competence Demonstration: To qualify as a Pr Cert Eng, an individual must:
  • 1. Obtain a Government Certificate of Competency (GCC): This certificate is issued by the Department of Employment and Labour and is mandatory for engineers working in factories or mines. It certifies that the holder has the requisite knowledge and skills to manage and supervise engineering operations in these environments.
  • 2. Meet educational requirements: The baseline qualification for this category is typically an NQF Level 6 qualification, such as a National Diploma in Engineering. This foundational education provides the necessary theoretical background for practical application in industrial settings.
  • 3. Gain practical experience: Applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience in engineering operations, showcasing their ability to apply engineering principles effectively in real-world scenarios.
  • 4. Undergo assessment: Candidates are evaluated based on their practical experience and the application of engineering knowledge in operational contexts.
  • 5. Success in the registration process, inclusive of the Experience Appraisal and the Professional Review Interview, to assess competence across defined outcomes aligned with international standards.
This pathway is particularly suited for engineers aiming to specialise in the operational aspects of engineering within industrial environments, ensuring that engineering practices align with safety standards and operational efficiency.
