Accreditation

Programme Quality Assurance is required under the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act 101 of 1997) and the EPA, empowering ECSA to conduct accreditation of HEI engineering programmes. The Acts also determine the maximum interval between such reviews. The Acts empower ECSA to grant accreditation with or without conditions, to withdraw accreditation or to refuse/ decline accreditation.

Graduates of accredited programmes practise in a globalised environment, even if they work locally. As such, local standards and practices align to international norms. The accreditation system is, therefore, committed to international benchmarking of its standards and accreditation processes against the Graduate Attributes of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA), and IEA best practice.

Accreditation of a programme signifies that the programme complies with the criteria regarding the educational requirements the individual needs to achieve to be eligible to apply for registration in a concomitant professional category.

ECSA conducts four types of accreditation visits.
Provisional Accreditation

Accreditation conducted on new programmes on completion of 50% of the academic credit requirements.
Regular Accreditation

Accreditation according to the accreditation cycle.
Interim Accreditation

Accreditation is held at a time within the regular cycle as requested by the ATC and is based on the decision of the findings during the previous Regular Accreditation.

 

 

 

 
Final Accreditation

The accreditation awarded to the programme that has been given a notification due to existing or newly picked deficiency during Interim Accreditation

 

 

Through the Educational Accords and Competence Agreements members of the International Engineering Alliance establish and enforce internationally bench-marked standards for engineering education and expected competence for engineering practice. Further, by ECSA being a signatory of the Washington Accord; Sydney Accord and Dublin Accord, we commit to development and recognition of good practice in engineering education. And this we do through our accreditation process.
