Identification of Engineering Work
Identification of Engineering Work
The Identification of Engineering Work (IDoEW) entails defining and demarcating the specific engineering activities that registered professionals in different ECSA categories are authorised to perform. It requires Registered Persons to possess core competencies within their respective categories and disciplines, ensuring they can carry out designated tasks effectively. The IDoEW Rules provide a concise framework for determining the scope of work for each registration category, acknowledging potential overlaps while clarifying accountabilities. This includes performing core services within specific practice areas of an engineering discipline, aligning with the scope of their registration and expertise.
This type of work is prescribed in the Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000, which calls for the identification of the type of engineering work that must be performed by engineering practitioners.
The Council has consulted a wide array of stakeholders on the Identification of Engineering Framework which was gazetted in March 2021.
The engineering fraternity was required to submit compliance plans that provide the procedures for ensuring that all engineering work is appropriately identified and ascribed to registered persons.
ECSA is reviewing the fraternity’s compliance as well as launching sector engagements to educate stakeholders about the enforcement framework and its implementation.
