During a recent meeting of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) held in Alaska, the IEA confirmed and recognised ECSA’s standards and processes for the Washington Accord for an additional six years. The renewed recognition reaffirms that South African engineering education continues to conform to global standards.
What the IEA does
The International Engineering Alliance is an international body established to advance the benchmarking of educational standards and engineering competency standards. Its primary aim is to promote the recognition of substantial equivalence in engineering qualifications through the accords, and to promote and support engineering practitioners’ mobility through the competency agreements, across signatory jurisdictions.
A milestone for registered persons
ECSA Chief Executive Officer Sipho Madonsela welcomed the recognition:
“This recognition of ECSA by the International Engineering Alliance is a remarkable milestone which reaffirms that ECSA conforms to global engineering education and competences standards. It is particularly encouraging to note that this recognition further enables ECSA registered persons to gain recognition of their qualifications in other IEA signatory countries, and this is after gaining similar recognition in 2016 for the International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA) for recognition of our International Professional Engineers across signatories of the IPEA,”.
Leading engineering recognition in Africa
South Africa is the only country on the African continent that is a member of the International Engineering Alliance. Through ECSA, and in its role as Secretariat of the Southern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (SAFEO), South Africa has begun an initiative to assist other African countries with their recognition under the accords and agreements. As a statutory body, ECSA has a legislative mandate to regulate the engineering profession, including determining acceptable standards for the education and training of engineers, the accreditation of educational programmes at universities, and the management of the registration standards of engineering practitioners.
