The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) will observe World Engineering Day on 4 March 2023, joining the global engineering community in focusing attention on the contribution of the world’s engineers to a sustainable world. The observance is spearheaded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Marking World Engineering Day 2023
UNESCO leads World Engineering Day to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life, which ECSA notes is essential “to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development, especially in Africa and the small island developing states.” Each year UNESCO sets a theme responding to a current or future challenge. The 2023 theme is “Engineering innovation for a more resilient world,” highlighting engineering’s essential role in development and human welfare and ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists can design solutions for local and global challenges.
A month of activities
To commemorate the day, ECSA will engage in month-long activities through partnerships with the motor industry, the education sector, voluntary associations and the water industry. The activities will be hosted in person, on virtual platforms including social media, and on broadcast platforms, so that different audiences can take part in discussions on topics of interest.
