The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) met with Voluntary Associations at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre on Thursday, 02 August 2018 to discuss its revised Voluntary Associations (VA) Recognition and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Frameworks. The workshop, attended by a large number of VAs, sought to engage, apprise and foster better working relationships with all members of the associations.
Purpose of the workshop
Addressing the members, ECSA CEO Mr Sipho Madonsela said the purpose of the workshop went beyond sharing the implementation of the gazetted frameworks. It aimed to ensure that Voluntary Associations understand the newly refined processes, to solicit inputs from VA members, and to applaud them for their ability to keep the associations sustainable.
Revised CPD rules
Presenting the revised CPD rules and framework, Mr Nxumalo, Executive of Policy and Standards at ECSA, said the revised and approved rules stipulate that the ECSA Council will be the sole authority in the accreditation, monitoring and validating of CPD activities and providers. He added that this will result in ECSA developing an accreditation policy framework to be followed by universities and VAs to verify CPD providers and validate activities, and that ECSA will also develop a policy for auditing and monitoring VAs and universities.
The new VA framework
Mr Christopher Tsatsawane, Strategic Services Executive at ECSA, presented the new framework for VAs, which sets out the rules and processes to follow towards recognition and requires all VAs to apply in accordance with its prescriptions. He said ECSA commits to equipping the VAs, partnering with them in developing alternatives and identifying preferred solutions, working directly with them throughout the process, and obtaining feedback on all relevant issues. Concluding the workshop, ECSA President Mr Cyril Gamede said, one of the key themes that came out strongly today was we need to ensure that there is equity in participation without the loss of the quality and in so doing improving the sector in which we operate in
