The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the University of Johannesburg’s Hydrogen Innovation Society (UJHIS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create unique opportunities for engineering students. The partnership, which takes the form of an ECSA Student Chapter, seeks to provide opportunities for networking, mentoring and bonding over the engineering and built environment.
A first-of-its-kind Student Chapter
The Student Chapter encompasses a body of students at tertiary institutions who advocate for the professionalisation of the engineering environment. It will serve as a unique primary category of registration for all eligible students studying any engineering discipline at the University of Johannesburg, and it provides a skills pipeline for eligible graduates to progress towards candidacy in pursuit of professional registration with the Council. While student chapters within other built-environment professional councils and voluntary associations are sector specific, ECSA said this partnership factors in all engineering disciplines.
Benefits for engineering students
The purpose of the ECSA Student Chapter is to give students an advantage across all engineering disciplines, with the knowledge, experience and mentoring needed to begin their careers successfully. Through the partnership, various programmes, activities and projects will be undertaken to promote engineering among students at the University of Johannesburg. The initiative also gives students the opportunity to meet peers pursuing careers in engineering and to interact with industry professionals for mentorship and professional development.
While this is the first Student Chapter ECSA has established, the Council said there are plans to extend the scope and ECSA’s footprint across other higher institutions of learning.
