The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has secured renewal of its Sydney and Dublin Accords memberships through the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) for a further six years. The decision was finalised in June 2019 during an IEA meeting, reaffirming that South African engineering qualifications continue to meet international standards.
What the Sydney and Dublin Accords cover
The two accords recognise engineering education across signatory countries. The Dublin Accord addresses engineering technician education, while the Sydney Accord focuses on engineering technology programmes. South Africa founded the Sydney Accord in 2001 and was among the four founding members of the Dublin Accord in 2002.
How the renewal was achieved
The renewal followed an accreditation review conducted in 2018, during which representatives from Taiwan, New Zealand and Canada visited engineering programmes at the Durban University of Technology and the Tshwane University of Technology. The IEA comprises members from 36 jurisdictions across 27 countries and oversees seven international agreements that govern the recognition of engineering educational qualifications and professional competence.
Why the recognition matters
The renewed recognition confirms that qualifications earned through these accords in South Africa are mutually recognised among all signatory nations, supporting graduate mobility internationally and positioning the country’s engineering education as meeting global benchmarks. The next review cycle begins in five years, during which ECSA will maintain alignment with international educational standards.
