Persons recognised in the Specified Categories with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), are recognised for their specialist competence in performing specific engineering work in a variety of contexts including those related to lifting machinery, fire systems and medical equipment amongst others. This category is distinct from other engineering professions, as it focuses specific work and tasks to ensure safety, compliance, and efficiency.

To qualify in the relevant Specified Category, an individual must:

Meet educational requirements.










Gain practical experience:

Applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience related to the specified work in the category.






Undergo Assessment

Candidates are evaluated based on their practical experience and the application of engineering knowledge in operational contexts.






Registration Process
Success in the registration process, inclusive of the Experience Appraisal and the Professional Review Interview, to assess competence across defined outcomes aligned with international standards.
