The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) kicked off National Science Week at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg. The week ran from 07 to 12 August 2017 and gave thousands of learners the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
An initiative for young learners
National Science Week is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), implemented by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA). The 2017 theme, “Science for Tourism”, offered learners the opportunity to engage with activities based on the chosen theme and to explore available career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
ECSA’s Engenius programme
ECSA’s learner programme, Engenius, showcased its activities through an exhibition and workshops. Engenius promotes engineering as a future career choice and encourages learners to pursue Mathematics and Physical Science at school. ECSA conducted four workshops per day for the duration of the week, giving learners the opportunity to explore engineering through a mechanical engineering activity involving the construction of a Bloodhound car. With interactive displays and 26 industry-specific exhibitors in attendance, the expected 6,000 learners at Sci-Bono were in for an engaging and informative week.
