The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has announced, with great sorrow, the sudden passing of its Sixth Term Council President, Mashao Lawrence Lebea Pr Eng. ECSA learnt of his passing on Tuesday, 7 December 2021.
A leader across ECSA structures
Lebea was inaugurated as the Sixth Term President of ECSA in December 2020, marking the start of a four-year term with Mashao Lebea Pr Eng as president and Refilwe Buthelezi Pr Eng as vice president. Over the years, he served in various ECSA structures, including the Fifth Term Council as Chairperson of the Central Registration Committee and Chairperson of the Research, Policy and Standards Committee.
Decades of engineering experience
Lebea’s experience in the engineering sector spanned over 36 years, with 26 years in key management positions in both the private and public sectors, including his role as Chief Executive Officer of Mtema Mashao Consulting Engineers, which he founded in 2002. He held a Master of Engineering from the University of Pretoria, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a National Diploma for Technicians in Civil Engineering.
He was affiliated with various engineering bodies, serving as a member of the Consulting Engineers of South Africa (CESA), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the South African Black Technical & Allied Careers Organisation (SABTACO), and as a fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers (SAICE).
A tribute from ECSA
ECSA described Engineer Lebea as a dedicated and humble servant of the engineering fraternity, a fountain of wisdom, a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope to everyone who had the privilege to work with him.
The Council said it was honoured by his leadership and ethical approach to steering the organisation forward.
