The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) will host the prestigious 2026 International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Meetings in Cape Town, South Africa, from 7 to 12 June 2026. The International Engineering Alliance 2026 Meetings will bring together global engineering leaders, regulators, education authorities and professional bodies from around the world.

As one of the signatories to the IEA’s internationally recognised accords and agreements, ECSA’s hosting of the 2026 meetings reflects South Africa’s growing influence in the global engineering landscape and reaffirms the country’s commitment to internationally benchmarked engineering education and professional standards.

What the International Engineering Alliance Represents

The IEA is a global partnership of countries that establishes and maintains internationally recognised standards for engineering education and professional competence. Through its accords and agreements, the alliance promotes international mobility for engineering professionals and supports the recognition of accredited qualifications across member economies.

ECSA is a full signatory to the following IEA accords:

  • The Washington Accord for professional engineers;
  • The Sydney Accord for engineering technologists; and
  • The Dublin Accord for engineering technicians.

ECSA is also a signatory to the following international agreements:

  • The International Professional Engineers Agreement (IPEA);
  • The International Engineering Technologists Agreement (IETA); and
  • The Agreement for International Engineering Technicians (AIET).

These accords and agreements ensure that engineering qualifications accredited by ECSA are recognised as substantially equivalent to those of other IEA signatories, many of which are among the world’s leading industrialised economies. This enhances opportunities for South African engineering practitioners to work and collaborate internationally while reinforcing confidence in the quality of local engineering education and training.

South African Leadership Within the IEA

ECSA’s contribution to the global engineering profession also extends to leadership within the IEA governing structures. ECSA representatives currently serving in leadership roles include Mr TC Madikane (President of the 7th term ECSA Governing Council), who serves as Deputy Chair of the International Professional Engineers Agreement; and Mr James Motladiile (7th term Governing Council member), who serves as Deputy Chair of the Dublin Accord.

The IEA governing group is responsible for providing strategic direction and operational management to the alliance, with office bearers serving two-year terms and eligible for a maximum of two terms. ECSA remains the only African country with full IEA membership, while Nigeria, Kenya and Mauritius currently participate as provisional signatories under the Washington Accord. In support of strengthening engineering capacity across the continent, ECSA is also actively assisting countries such as Botswana and Zambia in their efforts to advance towards IEA membership.

A Milestone for South African and African Engineering

The hosting of the closed 2026 IEA Meetings is expected to create valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, collaboration and engagement between South African engineering stakeholders and international counterparts, while further positioning South Africa as a trusted and globally connected engineering hub. As the statutory regulator of the engineering profession in South Africa, ECSA continues to play a critical role in advancing professional standards, safeguarding public interest and ensuring that South African engineering qualifications and practitioners remain internationally competitive.
