The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has inaugurated its newly appointed Sixth Term Council at a virtual ceremony held on 8 December 2020. The 47-member Council draws its members from various sectors including academia, Registered Persons from industry, members of the public and individuals representing the public and private sector.
New leadership elected
The new structure elected the President, Mr Mashao Lawrence Lebea, and Vice President, Ms Refilwe Buthelezi. The Council serves a four-year term commencing 20 November 2020.
A five-programme strategic framework
The Council will implement a strategic framework centred on five key programmes: education and training standards, professional registration, ongoing competence assurance, professional practice standards, and organisational support structures. Among its priorities are the review of the ECSA regulatory instruments
, advancing the Identification of Engineering Work (IDoEW) initiative, and pursuing gender, race and holistic industry transformation

ECSA also aims to increase the number of registered practitioners, develop engineering leadership, and strengthen international partnerships with other engineering councils.
