The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is bringing its Identification of Engineering Work (IDoEW) Roadshow to North West, with a public engagement session in Rustenburg on Tuesday, 4 March 2025. The IDoEW Roadshow invites members of the public and anyone conducting engineering work to engage on the Identification of Engineering Work Rule, gazetted in March 2021 (Government Gazette No. 44333, Volume 669, Board Notice 21 of 2021).

What the IDoEW Roadshow covers

The Identification of Engineering Work gazette sets out the engineering activities performed by persons registered in ECSA’s categories of registration and demarcates the type of work to be performed from one category of registration to another. The roadshow outlines the IDoEW framework, which is informed by the Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000 and calls for the identification of the type of engineering work that must be performed by engineering practitioners.

According to Dr Bridget Ssamula, Chief Executive Officer of ECSA, the nationwide roadshows follow industry-wide consultations and seek to gather views, concerns and practical recommendations, and to ensure common understanding among stakeholders on the implementation of and compliance with the IDoEW.

Who may perform engineering work

Dr Ssamula notes that the Act states that a person who is not registered in terms of the EPA may not perform any kind of work identified for any category of Registered Persons. She adds that such a person may not pretend to be, or in any manner hold or allow himself or herself to be held out as a person registered in terms of this Act.

The framework requires a Registered Person to possess the core competencies within the competency areas in the appropriate category of registration. Dr Ssamula says the IDoEW plays a major role in expanding ECSA’s legislative mandate, enabling the Council to protect the public, the profession and registered persons, and allowing members of the public to hold those who perform engineering work to account.
