The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is taking its Identification of Engineering Work (IDoEW) Roadshow to Limpopo, with a consultative session in Polokwane on Tuesday, 25 February 2025. The IDoEW Roadshow aims to inform and consult anyone conducting engineering work, as well as members of the public who use engineering services, on the IDoEW framework gazetted in March 2021 (Government Gazette No. 44333, Volume 669, Board Notice 21 of 2021).
What the IDoEW Roadshow addresses
The Identification of Engineering Work gazette sets out the engineering activities performed by persons registered in ECSA’s categories of registration and demarcates the type of work to be performed from one category of registration to another. Persons performing engineering work must be informed on the IDoEW framework, as set out in the Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000, to stay compliant with ECSA’s professional requirements for peer recognition and to guarantee the safety of the public and the environment.
ECSA CEO Dr Bridget Ssamula says that, according to the Act, a person who is not registered in terms of the EPA may not perform any kind of engineering work identified for any kind of Registered Persons. She alerts members of the public and any party claiming to be authorised to perform engineering work that: Any registered person who is not permitted to undertake work identified under the relevant sections of the IDoEW Framework or who has not obtained a transitional authorisation, special consent or category adjustment to do so is in breach of the code of conduct of ECSA and the provisions of the Engineering Profession Act relating to improper conduct.
Protecting the public and the profession
By outlining the core competencies that Registered Persons are required to possess, the IDoEW framework protects the public, Registered Persons and the engineering profession by ensuring that work performed meets the standards stipulated in the EPA. Dr Ssamula notes that the nationwide roadshows are designed to be consultative in nature, gathering as many views, concerns and practical recommendations as possible to build common understanding between stakeholders.
