A high-level delegation from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is in Mauritius for an official visit from 6 to 13 November 2021. ECSA, a statutory body established under the Engineering Profession Act (EPA), 46 of 2000, holds full membership of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).
Strengthening regional collaboration
The delegation, led by ECSA President Mr Mashao Lawrence Lebea, is in Mauritius to reaffirm its commitment to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology as counterparts and members of the Southern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (SAFEO). As the only engineering regulatory body on the African continent with full membership of the Alliance, ECSA intends, through a Memoranda of Understanding, to work with Mauritius to jointly contribute to the implementation of Southern African Development Community (SADC) capacity development in engineering.
Engagements with Mauritian engineering bodies
The delegation will interact with the University of Mauritius (UOM) engineering programmes for accreditation, including the Institute of Engineering Mauritius (IEM), through deliberation on issues of mutual interest in line with the objectives of the IEA. The delegation participated in a working session with the IEM, the Engineering Accreditation Board, the Council of Registered Professional Engineers and Higher Education Authorities, which culminated in a round table discussion on Wednesday, 10 November 2021.
On the morning of 11 November 2021, High Commissioner Dr Nelly Manzini was to lead the delegation on a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Honourable Mrs Leela Devi Dookhun.
