The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has announced the appointment of Dr Bridget Ssamula as its Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 November 2022, following an extensive recruitment process. She succeeds Mr Edmund Nxumalo, whose interim tenure concludes on 31 October 2022.
Experience behind the ECSA CEO appointment
Dr Ssamula brings over 23 years of experience in the built environment sector. Her qualifications include an MBA in Aviation Management, a PhD, and an MEng in Transport Engineering, together with a BSc in Civil Engineering. She is registered as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.
Her professional journey includes a tenure at AECOM since 2013, where she “progressed from Executive, Aviation and Rail Market Sector Lead in South Africa to Managing Director of Uganda and East Africa”. She currently serves as Senior Director for AECOM USA Key Accounts and Cities.
A record of academic and board leadership
Beyond her corporate roles, Dr Ssamula has contributed to academia as a senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Civil Engineering and as an Industry Advisory Board member. She has held board positions for over 15 years with organisations including Mayibuye Transport Corporation and Air Traffic Navigation Services. The Council expressed confidence in Dr Ssamula’s leadership as ECSA continues to regulate the engineering sector.
