IDoEW and Enforcement Rules

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is pleased to announce that the Identification of Engineering Work (IDoEW) Rules and the Rules for the Management of Enforcement Matters have been published in the Government Gazette and are now in effect.

The gazetting of these Rules is a significant milestone in strengthening the regulation of the engineering profession and advancing ECSA’s mandate as an effective regulator, assuring public safety. Together, they provide greater clarity on the engineering work that falls within ECSA’s regulatory scope, the registration categories responsible for undertaking such work, and the framework through which compliance will be monitored and enforced.

For Registered Persons (Candidates & Professionals), employer bodies, government institutions, higher education institutions, procurement authorities, clients, and the broader public, these Rules promote greater certainty, accountability and confidence in the delivery of engineering services. They reinforce the principle that engineering work with implications for public health, safety, the environment and infrastructure should be undertaken by competent and appropriately registered engineering practitioners.
