Legal: Acronyms
Since the coming into effect of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act No. 46 of 2000) the Council is charged with the responsibility to determine the abbreviations or accronyms of the titles referred to in Section 21 of the Act.

The Abbreviations were published in Government Gazette No. 25242, Board Notice No. 61 on 1 August 2003.

* Note: Persons who are still registered in this category, and who have not yet upgraded to "Professional Engineering Technician" are prohibited from using the new title and abbreviation "Professional Engineering Technician (Pr Techni Eng)". Failure to comply with this constitutes an offence as well as improper conduct.

PROTOCOL OF USE OF TITLES AND ABBREVIATIONS
In accordance with the rules of protocol, abbreviations used as a suffix behind a registered person’s name take precedence over all other titles, with the exception of an "Official Mark of Honour" awarded by any Government, eg. "OBE" or "MBE"
