Since the coming into effect of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act No. 46 of 2000) the Council is charged with the responsibility to determine the abbreviations or accronyms of the titles referred to in Section 21 of the Act.

PROTOCOL OF USE OF TITLES AND ABBREVIATIONSIn accordance with the rules of protocol, abbreviations used as a suffix behind a registered person’s name take precedence over all other titles, with the exception of an "Official Mark of Honour" awarded by any Government, eg. "OBE" or "MBE"
